  Roller Derby Debuts to Sell-Out Crowd @ Albany Armory Posted: Feb 23, 2008 10:25 PM Albany's new roller derby league kicked off its inaugural season Saturday night, playing to a sold-out crowd at the Washington Avenue Armory. Complete with fishnets, short skirts and bruises, the Department of Public Hurts and the Skatomasochists battled it out on the hardwood tonight. The league is made up of women ages 20 to 40, and is one of more than a hundred that have popped up around the country in recent years. Fans, who packed in to catch all the action, say they are excited about the Capital Region's newest entertainment event. Starr Sheffield, a fan, brought along some company to see the action. She said, "They like roller skating, so I figured I'd show them a different aspect of roller skating," "It shows sort of women's empowerment, and everybody has a good time. We've got grandma's, we've got moms, dads, significant others, everybody comes," said Dotti Damage, Captian of the Department of Public Hurts. If you missed the inaugural bout, you still have two more shots to see the ladies in action. The Albany All-Stars face off against Suburbia Roller Derby from Westchester County on March 28th. Then they will take on Assault City from Syracuse on April 26th.
